Liz Shepherd
Micro Pile, Intaglio, 5″ x 5″, 2011
Artist Statement
The work reflects memories of traumatic events and experiences. There are references to disturbances that are personal, public and historical. The series was built on witnessing the trauma that accompanies hurricanes and the sight of people falling from the World Trade Center. Piles of chairs not only stand in for human bodies but also represent the detritus of human lives that have been scattered in a terrifying and sudden cataclysmic event. While natural disaster was one motivation, debris also call to mind lives that have been disrupted by events as large as war or as intimate as the upheaval that accompanies displacement or illness.
