WINDOWS BROOKLYN was an art exhibition that was installed in numerous storefronts along Court Street and Smith Street in the Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn from June 6-13, 2009 and June 14-22, 2008.The exhibition took art out of the traditional museum or gallery setting and incorporated it into a vibrant public space. The show turned pedestrians into viewers, slowed down impatient walkers and transformed the frequently traveled routes of harried commuters. Turning independent business owners into collaborators who were willing to exchange commerce for culture, the exhibition was a commentary on the nature of the window both as a physical object and as an idea, one that goes far beyond just pieces of glass. We sought to reflect the incredible history of Brooklyn while simultaneously adding to it. It forged new connections between artists and their communities, changed the ways in which we direct our gazes, and altered our habits for interacting with the structures that surround us.
